I was given 4 seeds in autumn 2019 by Mr Carrott a North Petherton man. I sowed them in spring 2020 and was interested to find out more about the history of the bean. I found out that a Mr Gardener of North Petherton Somerset got the seeds from an old man in Burnham on Sea who had grown them for probably 50 years. For years locals passed the beans gardener to gardener including the Carrotts. Mr Gardeners Son in Law a Mr Waterjohn grew them and gave some seeds to a relation in Minehead. Two members of the family sent seeds to Garden Organic to be identified and after trialling they were recognised as a Heritage variety and were distinctly different. In 1998 they became known as the Bridgwater Bean. Garden Organic first made the seeds available to their members in 2002 and have appeared on their seed list 7 times since then the last time in 2017. The Carrott family have grown these beans and sold the plants for many years but 2019 was the last time.
