Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue is designed to be the most energy-efficient mass transit facility in the United States. It serves as a terminal for four different lines of the New York City Subway. The roof is glazed with photovoltaic (solar cells) panels manufactured by SCHOTT of Germany that are used to offset power needs of the station. The station is located at the corner of Stillwell and Surf Avenues on the site of the former West End Terminal. The reconstructed entrance building has a terra cotta facade in imitation of the former terminal. The former steel and concrete structure was badly corroded by the effects of salt water and poor maintenance and was replaced with a new more spacious structure with soaring roof arches.
