In March 2006 three Nepali men entered our house in Kathmandu armed with khukris and a pistol. At home were four women and two young children They repeatedly threatened to kill everyone unless they were given money. Fortunately no one was hurt. The day after the robbery the police brought round some books of photos to try and identify the criminals but without luck. Amazingly the police did catch two of the gang and they are currently awaiting trial. Crime rates continue to soar in this Asian city and although many guide books tell you how safe the streets are in Kathmandu the fact is that with increasing premature urbanisation comes increasing rates of violent crime.
