SHROVE TUESDAY STORY - TRADITION IS ALIVE AND SKIPPING IN SCARBOROUGH The South Bay Foreshore in Scarborough, Yorkshire, where people gather to skip every Shrove Tuesday. The tradition dates back to 1853 when locals would gather to celebrate one of the few public holidays available to them. It was originally known as 'Ball Day'. On Ball Day in 1903 it was noted that a few children were skipping. This became popular over the next few years until 1927 when the day became renamed as 'Scarborough's skipping festival'. Skipping on Shrove Tuesday used to be carried out at numerous locations across the country - in Scarborough the tradition is still thriving.
