Giordano Bruno Burning-Durand’s only picture of an historical event. Giordano Bruno’s martyrdom in all its harrowing grandeur is depicted in the Campo de’ Fiori, Rome of today. In the centre of the blaze we see Bruno's soul glowing in the flames. John the Baptist raises his own severed head towards the soul in fire. Saint Dominic in the lower left corner with his hound. Source: a quote from the “Fraternity of St. John the Baptist (literally it says ‘St. John the Beheaded’). This document was only published in 1889 and is apparently the only document that is authenticated by the church. It says: “At 2 am the fraternity was informed that the next morning was to take place the execution of a poor sinner. At 6 pm [the am and pm doesn’t make sense to me] the chaplan and the ‘comforters’ met at San Orsola and went to the prison in the tower of Nona. There they entered the chapel and said the usual prayers for the Giordano Bruno who was sentenced to death. He is a renegade brother from Nola, an impenitent heretic. We also called 2 padres of the Dominicans, 2 of the Jesuits, 2 from the New Church and 2 of the Church of St. Hiernoymus. They proved to him with great zeal and erudity his error. He, however, insisted till the end on his damned recalcitrance and twisted his brain and his mind with a thousand errors. He did not cease in his obstinacy, not even when he was taken to the Campo dei Fiori by the bailiffs/criers. There he was undressed, bound to a pole/stake and burnt alive (e quivi spogliato nudo e legato a un palo fu brusciato vivo).”
