Ferris wheel and currywurst at the Christmas market in front of the Neptunbrunnen fountain, Alexanderplatz, Berlin. Snack Bar at Alexanderplatz . Bells, tinsel, carols, decorated trees… Christmas has definitely arrived. This special moment of the year starts to be felt in every corner of the capital. There aren’t many cities in the world that know how to welcome Christmas quite like Berlin. It is a well-known fact that the German people love to celebrate Christmas. Berlin does not want to be overshadowed by cities such as Munich or Dresden, which are more widely known for their Christmas celebrations. It boasts sixty Christmas markets spread throughout the city: traditional or alternative, specialized in handcrafts or food, free or paid, there is a market for every taste. One of the more touristy and commercial markets, yet at the same time one of the most characteristic, takes place in the surroundings of Alexanderplatz. Entering by Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse, along the square and finishing up by Alexa, you will find one of the best Weihnachtsmarkt the city has to offer. Once past the glowing main gate we start to feel the true spirit of Christmas. The song “Merry Christmas Everyone” and other classics can be heard right next to the Neptunbrunnen statue, which itself is enclosed by one of the many ice skating rinks that will grace the city this month. From the sky, a 50-meter high ferris wheel looks down upon you. Those who brave the heights will be able to enjoy beautiful views of the entire market and also the surrounding Mitte district. There are long alleys in which cabins are placed in rows, small wood houses, roofs with fake snow, music, bells, sleighs and lights everywhere. It truly is a winter wonderland.
