The Round Island Lighthouse is pictured, April 22, 2021, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The 50-foot brick lighthouse was originally built on Round Island in 1859 and deactivated in 1949. The Round Island Lighthouse was heavily damaged by Hurricane Georges in 1998. Plans to rebuild the lighthouse in its original location were scuttled by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Because of its vulnerable location, the Pascagoula City Council decided not to rebuild on Round Island, opting instead to recover as much of the original foundation and material remnants as possible and rebuild inland. The Round Island Lighthouse was reconstructed in its current location south of Highway 90 and the Jackson County Memorial Bridge in 2012. Its fourth-order Fresnel lens casts white light visible for 12-14 miles. The Round Island Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated Mississippi Landmark.
