The Lighthouse Diaries. Two photographers, one British, and one American, set off on an adventure in November, 1992. Their quest was two-fold. First, to test their newly acquired sports car—a 1982 Toyota Celica GT. Second, to explore and photograph the east coast of America while seeking out legendary lighthouses. Sometimes bleak, but always beautiful, the photographers captured the lighthouses in a brief, black and white window of time. The quest was in three parts. In November 1992, the photographers set of from the Outer Banks of North Carolina and travelled north. They made it as far as Owls Head, Maine before winter closed in. The lighthouses of the Outer Banks were captured in early 1993. And finally, in September 1993, they ventured as far south as the Georgia- Florida border. Some of the lighthouses have hardly changed over time while others have decayed. But therein lies the reason behind our love affair with lighthouses. The Sentinels of the Sea remain on duty, regardless of our own brief lives.
