In 1988 Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory installed the first totally new supercomputer operating system in 20 years on the Livermore Computer Center's (LCC) Cray X MP/48. The new Network Livermore Timesharing System (NLTSS) replaced the old Livermore Timesharing System. Nearly five years in design and four years in implementation, NLTSS was a state-of-the-art distributed processing system, providing more efficient use both of the center's powerful multiprocessor supercomputers and the researcher's own enhanced workstation. A row of disk drives is seen here in front of the machine. The Cray X-MP was a supercomputer designed, built and sold by Cray Research. It was announced in 1982 as the "cleaned up" successor to the 1975 Cray-1, and was the world's fastest computer from 1983 to 1985. No photographer credited, circa 1980s.
