Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh visits Welsh guards on St. Davids Day. The Duke of Edinburgh presents a leek and has a word with the shortest Sergeant Major in the Brigade of Guards, C.S.M. Arthur Williams, of the 1st Bn. Welsh Guards at Pirbright in Surrey. He is five feet two inches and also has the distinction of being the longest-serving member of the Battalion, with 33 years to his credit. To-day is Shrove Tuesday, but more important to the Welsh Guards it is St. David's Day, and to mark the occasion the Duke of Edinburgh flew from Buckingham Palace to Surrey by helicopter in order to present the 1st Bn. Welsh Guards, of which he is the Colonel, with the traditional leek, the Welsh emblem. The duke wore service dress with buttons arranged in fives, to denote his membership in the Regiment.
