It was not until 1800 that an obligation to bury drowned sailors and passengers so many corpses were just left in the surrounding sand dunes. In 1854 an iron screw steamer called the 'Nile' was wrecked here with no survivors. Following this incident, Trinity house was put under pressure from both the public and merchants and in 1859 the light house was completed. The light house is solar powered and has been unmanned since 1995 with the actual light operating from a steel structure adjacent to it since 2012.
