Helmsley is a market town and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the River Rye, at the junction of the A170 and the B1257 and both the Cleveland Way and Ebor Way begin here. The town sits on the southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park which passes through Helmsley along the A170 road - the western part of the town is therefore within the National Park. It is in fact, the only market town in the North York Moors National Park! Helmsley is full of history - there are 51 listed buildings (including the12th century ruins of Helmsley Castle with Tudor Manor in the care of English Heritage and the Duncombe Park Estate). In 2015 it was crowned best market town high street in Britain. This is a view from Castlegate, looking along the footpath which leads to both the car park and the castle. The earliest castle was built in the 1120s but most of the stone structure dates back to the13th century. In the centre of the east curtain wall, a two story tower was erected. Then in the14th century, this East Tower was expanded upwards with an additional storey added, making it a massive "D" shaped tower. This is the section of the castle seen here.
