Victoria Memorial Hall (VMH) staffs and India's Ministry of Culture is starting the celebration of the centenary of the large white marble memorial hall dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria. This month, according to Times of India, two brand new light and sound shows for visitors, equipped with cutting-edge technology, are launched by the ministry. "This is part of an array of programmmes and events that the ministry of culture has lined up to celebrate the centenary of Victoria memorial, " the report says. Inaugurated and opened for public in 1921, Victoria Memorial Hall is now a museum and is having 25 galleries, including the royal gallery showcasing a number of portraits of Queen Vistoria and Prince Albert. Outside the hall, the lawns and gardens of 260.000 square-metres are now "the pride of the city" and "a biodiversity hotspot because of the large numbers of full-grown trees, " says Narayan Jain, a walking enthusiast and former president of Concern of Calcutta (CFC), as quoted by Times of India on Jan 26.
