Cw 8634 66504 and 66523 at Burscough Bridge 19.3.2024. A long line of engineering trains stand beside Burscough Bridge junction signal box in West Lancashire. The freight trains are here as part of the relaying of track further up the line between Hoscar and Parbold. By this time in the week-long project there was a long line of freight and engineering trains stabled between Burscough Bridge station and Sutch Lane level crossing. The bridge over the dip carries the Preston to Ormskirk railway in Burscough in West Lancashire. The Preston to Ormskirk line was opened in April 1849 and the Southport to Wigan line 6 years later in April 1855, so that may be why there is the dip in the track to get under the bridge? On the other side of the bridge the line rises sharply again to get over the Rufford branch of the Leeds and Liverpool canal which was opened in 1781. The signal box has junction as part of its name as it used to control lines that linked both the Southport to Wigan and Preston to Ormskirk lines via the Burscough Curves, removed in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The locomotive on this side of the bridge is Freightliner owned 66504 and beyond the bridge can just been seen 66523. The railway between Southport and Wigan is closed for the week from 18.3.2024 to 22.3.2024 with passenger services being replaced by rail replacement buses.
