Assembling miniature flowerpots to a fridge magnet of a traditional Cordoba patio. The historic city of Cordoba in the province of Andalusia in southern Spain is famous for its annual ‘Festival of Cordoba’ (patios), filled with a blaze of colour on surrounding wall hanging potted plants in large and small courtyards during the first weeks of May. Seeing a gap in the tourist market, Carmen María and Rafael Aguilera, both skilled jewellers, turned their hands at creating handmade miniature Cordoba patios. Their small retail business is called ‘Artisan Patios’ and it started trading in 2013. It is the only miniaturist workshop of its kind in Andalusia. Says, Rafael, ‘Carmen is in charge of design, and I do the creative work. The couple have been awarded the ‘Singular Work’ category in the city’s annual ‘Courtyards Festival of Cordoba 2023’ (patios): with their large-scale model of a patio on display in their front shop window.
