Coventry Foodbank, Progress Way, Coventry, CV3 2NT, UK. 14th December 2018. Hugh McNeill, manager of the UK's biggest foodbank, together with a team of dedicated volunteers, gear up for Christmas for the first time since Universal Credit has been rolled out across the West Midlands city. Coventry Foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust network of foodbanks, handed out 20, 089 emergency food packages to people in Coventry last year - a massive jump of 30 per cent from the previous year. Project manager Hugh McNeil said he is seeing more and more “working poor” people who have family and employment but cannot afford food, which has been exasperated by the roll out of Universal Credit. There is normally a food bank centre open somewhere in 2021's City of Culture 7 days a week distributing supplies via 16 partner churches. The Coventry operation is part of a nationwide network of food banks, supported by The Trussell Trust, which works to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. Coventry foodbank aims to provide their clients with three days worth of emergency food along with other support beyond food, including money management advice, to help them solve their crisis and last year fed just under 15, 800 clients.
