Berlin, Mitte. Schokoladen Cultural Project building with politacl banners on weathered old facade in Ackerstrasse. Founded 1990, Schokoladen is a cultural project founded in 1990. It hosts exhibitions, lectures, performances, music events, and courtyard parties. The weathered ornate façade was a former squat that became a legal tenant of a private landlord. As Mitte became a desirable area, the building landlord decided to evict the tenants and redevelop the site. The Schokoladen fought a long battle against eviction that they won in 2012 when the government facilitated the purchase of the building by the Edith-Maryon Foundation, a Swiss organization that supports art, cultural, and residential projects. The Foundation gave Schokoladen association a lease in perpetuity thus granting the association the right to stay in the building. The association is responsible for building maintenance
