Taken 27 May 2003 The following details extracted from Cotswold Journal Chipping Norton is the highest town in Oxfordshire and once an important centre of the wool trade Chipping Norton was given a charter by King John in 1205 to hold a wool fair This later became a Mop Fair a tradition still maintained as a funfair Chipping means market and the centre of the town is its extensive sloping Market Place St Marys church reflects the prosperity of the towns wool merchants living here in the 15th century Down in the valley is Bliss Tweed Mill no longer a mill this fine building is now a residential development The tall chimney is still a landmark on the approach to the town
