The Castell de Capdepera on the Spanish island of Mallorca is one of the largest castles on the island. The hilltop position commands a view of the surrounding countryside and out to sea, the latter being a popular route for invaders and pirates. The Romans were the first to build there in 310 AD. The site was later occupied by the Moors but the present castle dates from the 13th century during the reign of King James 11. He ordered walls to be built around the central watchtower, increased the fefences and added the class castle walls and crenelations. It was occupied by the miluitary until 1854 when it was abandoned. From then until 1983 it was in private ownership when Capdepera Town Council took it over and began the restoration. It is a great place to visit with superb views. There are restored walkways around the walls, although some are rather exposed and might prove a challenge for those who dont like heights!
