Informations supplémentaires:
When the Wall was built in 1961 part of it divided the cemetery of the Church of St Sophia (Sophienfriedhof). Thousands of graves were removed to create a clear field of fire in the border strip, but it is thought not all the graves of World War 2 bomb victims were removed. In 1997 the Sophien parish broke off two sections of the Berlin Wall that stood on what were believed to be graves from World War 2. The wall segments that were removed have been stored on the cemetery ground ever since. These can be seen in the centre of the view, alongside remains of the border strip Inner Wall. The Sophien Parish has also reconstructed a section of the Cemetery Wall (as it was in 1961) along Bernauer Strasse, seen in the foreground of the view. This was taken down by the border guards in 1983 to make room for the new 'Border Wall 75'. The 'Window of Remembrance' to Berlin Wall victims is seen on the right side of the view. The steel walls of a reconstructed border strip section are also seen in the foreground. In the far background rises the sightseeing stationary 'World Balloon' ('Weltballon'), located near the former border crossing at Checkpoint Charlie.
