Coffee farmers picking robusta coffee cherries at a hillside farm in Ciputri village, Cianjur regency, West Java, Indonesia. "Robusta is priced lower compared with arabica variety, but it's time now to pick robusta, " says Dudu Duroni, as he is working with his wife. Farmers in the area form a local farmers organization, besides establishing a long-term contract with a coffee processing industry to ensure they will get stable selling prices for both robusta and arabica cherries. "It helps whenever coffee price is going down outside, " says Dudu. "And we can always bargain for a good reason. However, diversification in crops is another thing that we should do since coffee alone is actually a long-term game." Coffee farmers in the area are also planting various kinds of vegetable, but they have also been suffering from the limitation of marketing lines for agricultural products, due to efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19. Worldwide coffee beans market was said oversupply last year. Global warming, meanwhile, has been posing other kinds of threat. "But we will carry on, " says Dudu.
