Clarkair CA1 Bulldozer. Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road, Southwark, London, England. American air portable earth-moving equipment, used in the construction of runways in all theatres during The Second World War. The CA1 was designed to be air transportable inside a glider. They were to be used when airborne troops were sent to capture objectives that needed rapid engineering works - such as captured enemy airfields. The idea being that the bulldozers could then clear the airfield while the airborne forces held the perimeter, allowing transport aircraft to land with reinforcments and supplies. Used during Operation Market Garden and also by Chindit forces in Burma, where they were dropped by glider into virgin jungle clearings. They were then used to create makeshift airfields many miles behind Japanese lines (the Chindit airstrip Broadway being a good example). Becuase the gliders were dropped into uncleared jungle casualty rates amongst glider and dozer crews were very high, many being killed on high speed impact with things like tree stumps and hidden debris.
