Empty businesses are pictured on Dauphin Street, July 28, 2021, in Mobile, Alabama. Pictured from the left are The Haunted Bookshop, Sophiella Gallery, and The Haberdasher Pub. Businesses are still struggling to recover from losses of traffic and staff due to the coronavirus in 2020. Alabama, like many states, lifted its face mask ordinance in May, but a recent surge in coronavirus cases is prompting some states to consider reinstituting face mask requirements to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Alabama's COVID positivity rate is now the highest in the nation. There are currently no COVID-19 mandates in effect in Mobile or anywhere in Alabama. Currently, only 34 percent of Alabama’s residents have received the COVID-19 vaccination, and officials say the delta variant of COVID is causing a significant uptick in hospitalizations. A new Alabama law prevents governments, businesses, schools, and colleges from requiring vaccinations or asking for proof of vaccination. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
