Detail of the Spinary. Fountain of the Harpies, Island garden in the Spanish Royal Gardens, The Parterre garden, Aranjuez, Spain. It was made between 1615 and 1618 according to a project by Juan Fernández and Pedro de Garay. It consists of a square pylon, with four Corinthian columns in its corners. Some harpies are placed on the columns, which release water towards the central piece; in this, on a balustraded cup, is the figure of the Spinario. This sculpture comes from a lot that Cardinal Giovanni Ricci of Montepulciano gave to Felipe II in 1561 and is a bronze replica, attributed to Guglielmo della Porta, from the Hellenistic work of the 1st century B.C. In the square, in addition to this central group, there are four niches in the corners; erected in wood in 1594, they were replaced by others designed by Sabatini and made in 1782. They consist of four marble columns of the Doric order, in the shape of an exedra, and on them a quarter iron sphere. In the lower part, three small stone benches, and in the rest of the square another eight benches, all of them designed by Sabatini. Formerly this was the Plaza de los Reinos because on both sides of the main axis are drawn, with boxwood hedges, shields of the kingdoms of Aragon, Castilla, León and Navarra.
