A promient feature in other wise flat land, was built on an isolated hill of glacial drift. Over the centuries erosion by the sea has removed the western defences of the fort, an estimated 20 to 40m of the west side of fort has been lost in last 100 years or so. Originally 2 ramparts (survive up to 6m high) separated by a with a deep ditch, with simple gap entrance at SE made a complete circle arounf the top. There were circular buildings & other structures in the eastern part of the interior, and possibly a BA barrow at NE corner &/or a Roman pharos or lighthouse. Roman period finds suggest Roman occupation. Photo taken in March 1993, before the construction in 1994 of the groins that were designed to help stabilise the beach, and protect the hillfort. The National Trust took over management of the site in 2003 with plans to protect the fort from visitor damage (footpath to be diverted back through original entrance, display panels etc.) but to allow 'natural' erosion to continue. In 2013 the Environment Agency decided that modification (lowering) needed to be done to the southern groins on the beach as they were causing the shingle to build up at the end nearest the hillfort and letting the northern end, and North Wales Footpath erode further. Between June 2018 & February 2019 storms caused significant collapses of the cliff, especially of the southern ditch & ramparts. Since 2017 the CHERISH Climate Change & Coastal Heritage project has undertaken a series of investigations at the monument & within the wider landscape. eophysical surveys inside the fort revealed several roundhouses confirmed by excavations led by Gwynedd Archaeological Trust (GAT)
