The ancient breed of English Longhorns has been on the rare breeds list for a very long time but there is little chance now that this endearing race of cattle will die out due to the number of enthusiastic supporters both in the UK and overseas. It is raised now mainly for the beef industry and is reported as being a healthy meat. The cows are easily calved and make excellent mothers. They are primary grass feeders making them low maintenance. The breed was pioneered in England during the 1700s by Robert Bakewell. Cows weigh average 500-600kg and males average 1000kg. The image is of a mother and calf from the Tetford Herd in the Lincolnshire Wolds.
