The DIBATAG or CLARKES GAZELLE (Ammodorcas clarkei). Although resembUng the true gazelles in the face-markings, thedibatag, as it is called by the Somalis, is so different from those antelopesas to be entitled to constitute a genus by itself, being in manyrespects intermediate between the former and the gerenuk. Thehorns, which are present only in the males, are rather short, and havea regular upward and forward curvature, somewhat like those of a reed-buck ; they are ridged on the front for a considerable portion of theirlength. The neck is considerably elongated, and the tail long andthin. The general colour of the upper-parts is a deep cinnamon.Height at shoulder about 33 inches; weight from 65 to 70 lbs.When running, the long neck is thrown back towards the tail, whichis elevated, so that the two look as though they would touch.
