The fiesta de quince años (also quinceañero, fiesta de quinceañera) is a celebration of a latino girl’s 15th birthday. With its cultural roots deep in Mesoamerica, it is now widely celebrated throughout Latin-America and by immigrant Hispanics in the United States. Historically, in preparation for their future roles as wives and mothers, girls were taught cooking, weaving and about childbearing by the older women in their communities. The culmination of this education was the quinceañero party, when the girl’s father would present her to potential suitors. During a traditional Mexican quinceañero, the young girl is joined by her friends who take the roles of formal damas and chambelanes – seven or fourteen of each, representing the quinceañera’s childhood years – and a “man of honour”, who squires the young woman. Originally a simple celebration, the quinceañero has become an occasion for a large, often extravagant, party. Families often use event planners and arrange professional photoshoots.
