"Ferry leaving Newhaven harbour in a storm" Winner of the "Take a view" Landscape photographer of the year 2013 "Your View" catagory by Dave Lyon The picture was taken during a June storm in 2012 at Newhaven, East Sussex and the ferry was a Transmanche ferry leaving Newhaven for Dieppe. The wind was blowing from the south west gusting between 40 – 60mph. I had been photographing further along the harbour for about one and a half hours getting shots of waves breaking over the lighthouse on the end of the harbour wall. Conditions were poor, lots of airborne spray meaning constant cleaning of the camera lens and the tripod needing to be weighted down with my camera bag. I decided to try a different view from the shingle beach a few hundred yards further on so as to get a view of the outer wall. As I walked onto the beach, I spotted the funnel of the ferry. I struggled to run a further 100yds on the shingle, place my tripod a manage to get half a dozen shots before the ferry disappeared out to sea and to France. I suppose the waves must have been about 40 feet high, but appear higher because they are in the foreground. I think the judges liked the picture due to its immediate impact whilst more detail appears the longer you look at it. I hope people viewing it will enjoy it and gain some of the atmosphere that I experienced that day. Technical bit Taken with a Canon 5D MkII with a 100-400mm lens, 1/2000 sec f11. The RAW image was processed 3 times, once 1 stop under exposed once 1 stop overexposed and once normally. They were then combined to form an HDR image and then converted to monochrome.
