--FILE--Jaesoon Park, CEO of Samsung Greater China, speaks at a launch event for Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones in Beijing, China, 31 March 2015. Samsung Electronics Co. profit for the second quarter missed analysts' estimates as new Galaxy S6 smartphones failed to lure enough customers from Apple Inc.'s iPhones and cheaper devices made in China. Operating income fell 4 percent to 6.9 trillion won ($6.1 billion) in the three months ended June, the company said in a filing Tuesday (7 July 2015). That compares with the 7.2 trillion won average of 33 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Samsung¯s seventh straight quarterly profit drop comes as Galaxy S6 phone sales fell short of expectations it would attract users away from the iPhone 6. Production constraints for the S6 model with a curved display have led to shortages, trimming shipments of the device and leaving the company to rely more on its chip unit for earnings. "S6 didn't sell as well as the market had hoped for, partly because of continued outperforming of iPhones combined with the supply constraint, " said Greg Roh, a Seoul-based analyst at HMC Investment Securities Co. "Sales sharply missed the market expectation, which implies that overall technology industry demand for smartphones, TVs and PCs is weakening." Sales were 48 trillion won in the quarter, the company said today. That compares with the 53 trillion-won average of 37 analyst estimates.
