Press Release: For the first time since taking up the role as Colonel Grenadier Guards, His Royal Highness The Duke of York take the salute and inspect his troops on Horse Guards Parade on Saturday 1st June on The Colonel’s Review to ensure all is perfect before The Queen’s Birthday Parade on June 8th. The role is always undertaken by the Colonel of the Regiment “trooping” its Colour (ceremonial Regimental flag); and this year it is the Grenadier Guards. In an unprecedented achievement in recent Army history, in the second half of 2018, members of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards deployed concurrently on 3 separate operational tours to Iraq (Operation SHADER), Afghanistan (Operation TORAL) and South Sudan (Operation TRENTON). A frontline infantry regiment of the British Army, the Grenadier Guards can trace its lineage back to 1656 when they were raised as the sovereign’s bodyguards by King Charles II while still in exile in Bruges. The Grenadier Guards is recognised globally for their dual role excellence on operations and on ceremonial duties. They boast 78 battle honours having served with distinction in campaigns throughout British history, particularly in the Napoleonic, Crimean, Boer, First and Second World Wars. Members of the Grenadier Guards have been awarded a total of 14 Victoria Crosses and one George Cross. They, like all the soldiers on parade, are on constant readiness to deploy when needed at home or abroad. At the Trooping of the Colour they will be accompanied by the Band of the Grenadier Guards – one of the oldest and best-known military marching bands in the world. On this year’s parade the lead Guards battalion is supported by Nijmegen Company Grenadier Guards, Number 7 Company Coldstream Guards, F Company Scots Guards, the Welsh Guards who have just returned from operations in Afghanistan, and their regimental Bands including the Band of the Irish Guards.
