Jamestown, VA USA 9/1993. Jamestown was England's first major successful settlement in Virginia; arriving at their selected location on the James River on May 13, 1607, where three ships, the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery, chartered by the Virginia Company of London to settle their 104 passengers (one died during the voyage) and a complement of 39-military-all 143 were men. These hardy souls set into place the beginning of England's investment in what will become the United States of America. From this small inhospitable island along the James River, 143 settlers were to give rise to Virginia's capitol from 1607 to 1699 when the seat of government was moved to Williamsburg. Today, Jamestown is one of three locations composing the Historic Triangle of Colonial Virginia, along with Williamsburg and Yorktown, with two primary heritage sites. Historic Jamestowne* is the archaeological site on Jamestown Island and is a cooperative effort by Jamestown National Historic Site (part of Colonial National Historical Park) and Preservation Virginia. Jamestown Settlement, a living history interpretive site, is operated by the Jamestown Yorktown Foundation, a state agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia. *Wattle and daub is a composite building method used for making walls and buildings, in which a woven lattice of wooden strips called wattle is daubed with a sticky material usually made of some combination of wet soil, clay, sand, animal dung and straw. Wattle and daub has been used for at least 6, 000 years.
