In 1939, the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society established the Desert Botanical Garden at its current location in Phoenix's Papago Park next door to the Zoo. It now contains more than 50, 000 plants, one-third of which are native to the area. Many are rare or endangered. The collection is focused on plants adapted to desert conditions, including an Australian collection, a Baja California collection, and a South American collection. The garden also offers tours, workshops, and lectures on desert landscaping and horticulture, nature art and photography, health and wellness. There are also concerts, art exhibitions, and the local traditional Las Noches de las Luminarias featuring some 8, 000 luminarias lining the footpaths. What a lovely spot for a morning photo shoot — looking across a well-planted area in the garden toward one of the hills in Papago Park.
