The bandura is a multi stringed Ukrainian folk instrument It is often thought of as the musical symbol of Ukraine as its historic fate reflects the difficult times in which the people have lived Modern instruments have up to 65 strings tuned chromatically through 5 octaves The metal strings are struck by the fingers The body of the instrument is usually made of maple or willow with a soundboard attached to it made of spruce The history of the instrument can be traced back to the 6th century and it occupied a position and function in Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages similar to that of the lute in Western Europe Numerous bandurists performed in the courts of the Ukrainian Russian and Polish nobility It became the favorite instrument of the Ukrainian Kozaks In the late 18th and 19th century it lost its popularity in the houses of the gentry being replaced by more fashionable Western instruments such as the piano It continued to be played by the folk being played by itinerant blind professional musicians known as kobzars One of the most famous was Ostap Veresay Their legacy contained many dances historic folk songs and a specific epic ballad known as dumy These pieces have left their mark in classical music being reflected in the famous Dumky a small duma by noted Slavic composers such as Dvorak Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky Unfortunately in 1875 the Russian Tsarist regime proclaimed an edict that banned the stage performance of songs in the Ukrainian language and performances of the bandura and the art form fell into decline In 1902 at the XIIth Russian Imperial Archeological Conference when scholars had thought that all the kobzars had finally become extinct a number were discovered and a petition was sent to the government to stop police persecution of these blind singers Restrictions were somewhat relaxed although specific permission from regional governors was required in order to perform on stage The instrument underwent a period of renaissance and a concerted e
