Baku Azerbaijan January 16 2003 Students take exams at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy as the teacher looks on adding to the stressful environment in Baku January 16 2003 This was the first Academy set up in the world to study oil and prominent engineers and leaders from hundreds of countries are part of the distinguised alumni Since the breakup of the Soviet Union and the war with Armenia the Academy has suffered dwindling enrollment and financial assistance Now they are trying to adapt to the changing times by adding Business Degrees and exchange programs with Western Universities as well as adapting their ways of teaching and style of examinations During these exams some classes were tested in a typical Western style with all the students taking the exam at once while other classes kept the old tradition of being examined one by one orally by the teacher photo by Ami Vitale
