The St. Felix warehouse is one of the most architecturally impressive examples of a 19th-century warehouse, built in 1860 as a storage place for bulk goods such as coffee, grain, cheese and tobacco. Since 2006 it houses the municipal archive, holding more than 24 km of records for among others Antwerp city government. The municipal archive also comprises a very large image bank which includes many pictures of the port. It now contains more than 70, 000 digitized photographs. As an independent municipal company the Port Authority also keeps its records in the Felix Archive. The history of the port is inseparably bound up with the history of Antwerp and of Flanders. The Port Authority archive covers the various aspects of port operation in detail, including the expansion of the port, its technical facilities, its administrative and financial management and safety and security in the port. As such it is an extremely valuable resource for studying the development of the port facilities. The archive also contains some unique items such as the parchment map of the Scheldt dated 1505. With a length of 5.5 m it is the largest pictorial map of Flanders from the beginning of the 16th century.
