Qatar went on a building spree for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The nation constructed hotels, highways, metro lines and other infrastructure to accommodate the thousands of soccer fans who descended on the country. Though Qatar’s World Cup bid was marred by accusations of bribery the successful execution of the event went some way towards rehabilitating Qatar in the region. From 2017 to 2021 Qatar was shunned by Saudi Arabia and a number of Gulf states in what became known as the Qatar diplomatic crisis. Other states followed in the diplomatic boycott such as the Maldives, Mauritania, Senegal, Djibouti, the Comoros, and the Tobruk-based government in Libya. The government of Qatar was accused of allowing financiers of US-designated terrorist groups to live unimpeded in the country. It was also criticised for maintaining close relations with Iran. Saudi Arabia led the blockade demanding Qatar stop its links to US-designated terrorist groups, lessen its ties to Iran and close down the news broadcaster Al-Jazeera. The Emir of Qatar told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that he did not consider these organisations to be terrorist. Saudi Arabia blocked Qatar’s only land border closing the land route for food imports. In response Qataris increased their imports from Iran. In 2021 Qatar and Saudi Arabia agreed to end the crisis unconditionally.
