The "Jovellanos" Public Library is the State Public Library in Gijón whose management was transferred to the Autonomous Community of the Principality of Asturias in 1986. The Library remained on Jovellanos street until 1932, at which time, after the Decree of the government of the Second Spanish Republic by which the Society of Jesus was dissolved, the City Council of Gijón agrees to dedicate part of the seized building of the Colegio de la Inmaculada to the Institute-School and move the Institute of Jovellanos there. Four years later, at the beginning of the Civil War in Asturias, the Library and its rich bibliographic collections disappeared on August 21, 1936 in the fire at the Simancas Barracks with which it shared facilities.
