Nightime at Berlin's Museum for contemporary art in the former railway station, Hamburger Bahnhof. Berlin Mitte 2005. HGW DE053917 RIGHTS PROTECTION AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. The Hamburger Bahnhof was built 1846/47 in late classicist style. It is the only old terminal station building remaining in Berlin. For forty years it served as the terminal between Hamburg and Berlin until it was closed in 1884. After modernization it reopened in 1906 as the Museum of Transport and Construction. The war-torn building was inaccessible after 1945. It stood empty for many decades and was again used for exhibitions in 1987. A year later the first exhibition of contemporary art entitled "Zeitlos" inspired the foundation of a permanent museum of contemporary art in the Hamburger Bahnhof. After reconstruction and modernization to designs by the architect, Josef Paul Kleihues, the museum opened in November 1996. Since then diverse special exhibitions have become a regular feature in various sections of the museum.
