Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe: THESE STUNNING photos show a manmade lake teeming with life as grazing animals and birds flock to the nutrient-rich waters of Lake Kariba. One image shows an elephant silhouetted by a beautiful sunset around the edges of Zimbabwe?s Lake Kariba. Lake Kariba in the Matusadona National Park was formed in the 1950s when the Zambezi River was damned to gain hydroelectric energy. When the water levels rose many of the animals were displaced so had to be transported to the new lake. The lake is full of nutrients and is teeming with fish. The sediment pushed to shore creates rich flood plains which attracts many grazing animals such as elephants. These images were captured by freelance photo-journalist Irene Amiet (42) in the Matusadona National Park in Zimbabwe using a Sony A9 camera. ?As the sun is too strong during the day, the elephants seek shelter in the close-by Mopane woods, ? said Irene. ?As soon as the heat settles, they emerge from the thicket onto the flood-plains. The open horizon makes for a great chance to capture silhouetted animals at sunset. ?Observing a herd of elephants for most of the afternoon, we placed ourselves anticipating where their slow journey to the water would take them so we wouldn?t disturb their progress but would get the sun set behind them.? ?Images for me ought to be evocative, something one can keep looking at for inspiration, relaxation, simple peace. It?s not escapism as all the images are true captions of something that?s real and part of our world still. ?After a while I put the cameras aside to watch the last moments of daylight without distractions.
