The Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park located in the Jaen province of Andalucia, Spain was declared a biosphere reserve by Unesco in the 1980’s. It is Spain's largest protected area and ranks second largest in Europe. It contains beautiful mountain countryside and valleys rich with wildlife, flora and fauna and the renowned Guadalquivar river. The town of Cazorla with medieval and Moorish origins is situated on the western slopes of the Sierra de Cazorla and provides an important base for tourism in the region. It is a gateway town to the mountains behind that are often snow capped in colder months.Their rocky features include the Castellones del Gilillo, Raja de Cinta Prieta, and Cascada de la Escaleruela. The town settlement dates back over 2000 years. Initially founded by the Romans it then flourished under Moorish rule before Christian control took over. The protective tower and castle known as Castillo de la Yedra dates from the 11th century Moslem era and was a strategic stronghold, one of many castles and watch towers that are dotted along the base of the mountains. Cazorla also has another castle, a hermitage and the ruins of the Santa Maria church. Whitewashed houses, hotels and guest houses flank the valley of the Cerezuelo river with its cultivated terraces. The surrounding countryside is a major producer of high quality olive oil.
