The old corner of the city is a potpourri of rich cultural treasures. From Dhaka, every historic metropolis of the subcontinent that dates back to the Mughal era has many things in common. The presence of some regal elements is still available in these old towns largely because the royal dynasties resided there at some point. Whether, its foods, dresses or modes of transportation, there is always something that is reminiscent of its history. But the colors of the aristocracy have been marred by a dense population, noise and confusion. Old Dhaka is changing fast and this change is creating huge impact on the lives of some certain sections of people. For example, horse-drawn carriages are having a tough time to survive as a public transport and thus their owners, drivers and workers are hit hard by the new face of the old city. In this age of mad rush, when the mass commuters prefer engine-based vehicles to move fast, then what is the situation of horse cart business, how the horse carriage owners and workers are leading their lives and what would be the future of this traditional transport. A group of young riders aged between 10 to 16 years drives most of the horse carriages in Dhaka. Street smart, brave and a bit brash, these children and teens have faced a harsher part of reality but haven’t lost their innocence completely.
