The Masdar City campus of Khalifa University of Science and Technology is the main location of its renewable energy and sustainable technology-focused Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, and as such, is located at the center of the sustainable urban development. The campus was designed by renowned architectural firm Foster & Partners to provide a new model for sustainable living and working. Covering 32, 783 square meters of purpose-built facilities, it includes student apartments, laboratories, cleanrooms, a microscopy suite, a knowledge center, a 60-seat auditorium, a multipurpose hall, gym, canteen, cafes and retail outlets. The campus buildings draw strong stylistic references from traditional Arabic architecture, and are set close together to maximize shade and to funnel breezes. Windows are designed to capture natural light and reduce reliance on artificial lighting, while at the same time minimizing the intense glare. Masdar Institute’s campus uses significantly less energy and water than similar sized campuses and businesses and is powered entirely by renewable energy.
