With a Scoville rating in excess of one million SHUs (Scoville Heat Units), the Bhut Jolokia is one of the hottest chillies in the world (approximately 300 times hotter than a Jalapeno). It goes by many names, including: Naga Morich; Bih Jolokia; Bhout Jolokia; Borbih Jolokia; Naga Jolokia, Nagahari; Raja Mirchi; Ghost chilli; Ghost Naga; Nai Miris; Saga Jolika; Dorset Naga. The Bhut Jolokia is a tropical chilli originating in Assam, India, and does not thrive well in cooler climes. However, with care, plenty of light, the right amount of moisture and the use of a heated propagator, the Bhut Jolokia can be grown in temperate countries. The plant in this picture is growing in a pot in Oxfordshire, UK. It started life as a seed in a heated propagator before being potted and transferred to a warm, sunny, sheltered spot in the garden (left outside during the day, brought inside at night).
