The Brooklyn Bridge New York City United States of America North America, Brooklyn Bridge . Built between 1870 and 1883 , and initially named as " Bridge New York and Brooklyn , " was the first suspension bridge in the world built on steel, conviertiendo arguably one of the main icons of the city. Six hundred people worked on this project which was designed by John Roebling , who died before the beginning of its construction. In 1883 , a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by the idea to build a spectacular bridge that connected New York with Long Island. However, bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was impossible and told Roebling to forget the idea. I just could not be done , it was not practical. Never had previously done The Brooklyn Bridge ( originally known as Bridge and Brooklyn New York ) connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York City . At the time of its opening it was the world's largest suspension bridge ( measured 1825 meters long, and the light with batteries is 486.3 meters , record light . Was also the first suspended by steel cables . Since then , it has been become one of the most recognizable symbols of New York.
