Old wasp nest taken down from a wood shed roof after the colony of Tree Wasps died out in the late autumn and the queen abandoned the nest to hibernate for the winter. Wasps do not return to, or reuse their nests the following year. This nest is shown upsidedown. When built and in situ the entrance hole would have been pointing downwards to protect from the weather, but this nest has been placed upside down on a board to show the classic ball shape made from layers of paper built outwards around a central core. The 'paper' was made from wood fibre chewed by the wasps from old wood, fences, garden furniture etc. and mixed with their saliva to make a form of papier mache. This nest is a small example of its kind, aprox 20cm diameter, and shows tiny holes in its surface made by other insects. It may have been abandoned during the summer.
