Caption: Axu, Sichuan, China - Aug 2003. Buddhist monks file out of a prayer house to participate in the birthday celebration of Guru Rimpoche at a small monastery in Axu, the former Tibetan kingdom of Kham. Guru Rimpoche founded the Nyingmapa school of thought, and is responsible for bringing Buddhism to Tibet. The three-day festival is made up of several dances, each representing different manifestations of Guru Rimpoche. After enticing evil spirits into the procession, the climax and primary goal of the festival is to eventually destroy them to ensure a prosperous new year.
