Cw 8399 Wash wall repairs digging out silt 7.8.2023. Repairs are continuing to the damaged wash wall of the Leeds and Liverpool over a culvert between bridges 32 and 31 near Burscough in West Lancashire on Monday the 7.8.2023. A leak had been detected from the canal with the canal flowing into an adjacent farm field. Attempts were made to stop the water flowing through the wash wall with a plastic fibre sheet but this didn’t stem the flow. On Sunday the 16th of July two fibre dams where installed either side of the leak, with pumps to keep the water flowing towards Liverpool. This picture was taken 23 days later after the water had all been drained and repairs are underway. The stones of the wash wall have now been reset back into place and a pile of clay has arrived to reline the canal. The old slit that covered the culvert is being removed before the new clay is put into place to reseal the canal bed. Once this has been done the towpath behind the wall will need to be reinstated and then the canal refilled before navigation can resume.
