Pirelli’s fitters attach the wheels to the designated tyres for each team, Mexican City Grand Prix, Mexico, 26 October 2023. Pirelli ships more than 1, 800 tyres to each event. The makeshift factory is divided into two sides, with each side responsible for 5 teams. The teams are allocated based on the previous championship results. Wheels are fitted to the tyres according to FIA allocation of types of wheels (soft, medium or hard and by component). All wheels are fitted in the same way: by applying glue to the rim and tyre, fitting the barcode over the valve, inflating the tyre to 60psi and then draining the air to 45psi. Predetermined lasers are used to determine how round the tyre and wheel is. After each race, the teams must return sets of tyres (whether used or unused) for Pirelli to remove, crush and ship back to the UK where they will be burnt. The tyres arrive in 9 containers and leave, crushed, in 3 containers. Each tyre is scanned in and scanned back out. Credit: Lexie Harrison-Cripps
