While it is convenient to consume drinks straight out of plastic bottles, the trash that is accumulated in the process takes a huge toll on the health of our environment. Plastic bottles used to package water take over 1, 000 years to biodegrade and, if incinerated, produce toxic fumes. Floating plastic waste, which can survive for thousands of years in water, serves as mini transportation devices for invasive species, disrupting habitats. Plastic buried deep in landfills can leach harmful chemicals that spread into groundwater. Recycling reduces the pollution that can come from the chemicals used to make these bottles. It also helps cut down on the amount of trash thrown into landfills so our garbage doesn’t take up much space. Recycling a ton of plastic saves energy equal to 5.774 kWh. That’s the equivalent to the amount of energy consumed by two people for a year. In addition, emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases will be reduced if recycling takes place of the production of new plastics. In the same way, fewer plastics in landfills means less emission of common landfill gases like carbon dioxide and methane. Recycling of plastic bottles not only keeps tons of waste out of landfills but also conserves natural resources such as trees, metal ores, and sand.
